Düsseldorf - The North Rhine-Westphalian Transport Minister Hendrik Wüst (46) is to succeed Armin Laschet as Prime Minister and CDU state party leader.
According to information from the German Press Agency, Laschet submitted this personnel proposal to the CDU state executive in Düsseldorf on Tuesday.
The new Prime Minister must be elected by the Düsseldorf state parliament.
A state party conference in Bielefeld will decide on the new party leadership on October 23.
The new regulation is necessary because Laschet had declared before the federal election that he was going to Berlin “without a return ticket” - even if he did not become Chancellor.
In the federal election, the CDU had to accept significant losses, even in the most populous state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
