The die is cast: NRW Transport Minister Wüst is to inherit Laschet as Prime Minister and CDU state party leader.

“A doer”, Laschet advertises in front of the party committees.

Düsseldorf - The North Rhine-Westphalian Transport Minister Hendrik Wüst (46) is to succeed Armin Laschet as Prime Minister and CDU state party leader.

According to information from the German Press Agency, Laschet submitted this personnel proposal to the CDU state executive in Düsseldorf on Tuesday.

The new Prime Minister must be elected by the Düsseldorf state parliament.

A state party conference in Bielefeld will decide on the new party leadership on October 23.

The new regulation is necessary because Laschet had declared before the federal election that he was going to Berlin “without a return ticket” - even if he did not become Chancellor.

In the federal election, the CDU had to accept significant losses, even in the most populous state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

After the move of the previous FDP parliamentary group leader Lydia Hüskens to the state government, the seven Liberal MPs need a new chairman.

Hüskens has been Minister for Digital and Infrastructure in the new black-red-yellow state government since Thursday.

Solidarity rally in front of the synagogue in Hagen

Several hundred citizens, city officials and police officers showed their solidarity with the Jewish community in Hagen on Thursday.

They demonstrated quietly in front of the synagogue, on which an attack allegedly foiled by the security authorities was planned.

The people followed a call by the mayor of Hagen, Erik Schulz (non-party).

Laschet had recommended Wüst as a forward-thinking, wise acting politician, the dpa learned from participants.

Accordingly, Laschet said: “What is needed now is a doer.

That's him. ”There was a lot of approval for the personnel proposal.

Wüst had received widespread support from the party in recent weeks.

Unlike some of the other possible successor candidates mentioned above, Wüst fulfills the constitutional requirement that he has a state parliament mandate and could be directly elected as prime minister by parliament.

The next regular state election in North Rhine-Westphalia is on May 15, 2022.

It is to be expected that the 46-year-old will now be built up with an office bonus for the top candidate.

No resistance against the economically liberal desert is to be expected from the FDP coalition partner either.

According to reports from FDP circles, Laschet and Wüst will be guests in a special group meeting of the Liberals this Wednesday before the plenary session of the state parliament.

The CDU and FDP have a wafer-thin government majority of just one vote in the state parliament, which they have had for over four years.
