Authorities in Cyprus do not believe that Iran is involved in planning to harm Israeli businessmen, despite statements by the prime minister and other senior officials, the Cypriot website Philenews reported today (Wednesday).
It was further reported that the authorities do not believe that billionaire Teddy Sagi was not the target, as alleged, but other senior executives at his gambling company operating on the island.
The affair came to light after Nicosia police arrested a Azeri citizen last week, with a Russian passport, on suspicion of being hired to carry out the assassinations.
The 38-year-old suspect is not cooperating with police and he refuses to answer questions, but yesterday he presented to police the two places on Napa Island where he rented two cars.
A gun with a silencer was found in one of the cars, shortly after it crossed the buffer zone separating Turkish Cyprus from the Greek part of the island.
According to media reports, he arrived from Russia three weeks ago and was under police surveillance.
Claimed that Iran was trying to eliminate him.
