She communicated this to the highest federal authorities in an official letter.
"Special characters as word components in official communication" are "not to be used", says the letter, which was sent to ministries and the Chancellery, among others.

The letter refers to the opinion of the German Spelling Council.
Accordingly, the use of the special characters “currently” is illegal.
