District - A confused pensioner (86) stopped the Holzkirchen autobahn police on Wednesday on the A8.
He was driving the wrong way.
On Wednesday (October 6th), shortly after 2 a.m., the operations center in Rosenheim received several messages about a wrong-way driver who was on the road to Salzburg in the direction of Munich.
When the car was seen for the first time, it was at the Weyarn junction.
"A patrol from the Holzkirchen autobahn police was able to catch up with the wrong-way driver shortly after the Holzkirchen service area and drove parallel to him on the Munich lane," said the police.
"Despite the blue lights and loudspeaker announcements, the VW, occupied by an 86-year-old retired bus driver, continued its journey undeterred."
Wrong driver makes a confused impression
The motorways A8, A99 and A995 in the direction of Salzburg were therefore blocked by several strips of the Munich police headquarters in order not to endanger oncoming traffic.
The first cordon was ignored and bypassed by the pensioner.
"Police officers at the barrier were able to avoid the vehicle unharmed," said a message.
The VW then couldn't get past police cars that were standing further ahead and could be stopped two kilometers after the Munich-South motorway junction without an accident.
"Overall, the 86-year-old made a very confused and disoriented impression," summarized the Holzkirchen motorway police.
“He couldn't say how this odyssey came about.” Nevertheless, criminal proceedings for endangering road traffic await him.
As a result, he had to hand in his driver's license directly to the police.
After the police measures were over, the man was handed over to his family.
Motorway police Holzkirchen is looking for witnesses
"It is only due to chance that there was no serious accident," the police explained.
"Several road users had to avoid the VW to prevent a collision, and there were loud witnesses to several dangerous situations." On the A92 near Freising there was a serious accident by a wrong-way driver that same night.
Victims in connection with the ghost drive or witnesses who can provide relevant information are asked to report to the Holzkirchen motorway police on 08024/90730 or any other police station.
