Amman-Sana

The Ministers of Energy and Electricity in Syria, Jordan and Lebanon agreed today on an action plan and a timetable for restarting the existing electrical interconnection lines between the networks of the three countries.

Jordanian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Hala Zawati said in a statement to reporters after a tripartite meeting held in Amman: During the meeting, it was agreed to supply Lebanon with part of its electrical energy needs from Jordan through the Syrian electrical network.

Zawati added that the meeting presented an action plan and a timetable for restarting the electrical interconnection line between Jordan and Syria, conducting all technical studies and preparing the necessary agreements to implement the supply process.

Zawati indicated that the meeting aimed mainly to set a clear and specific action plan and timetable for supplying Lebanon with Jordanian electricity through the Syrian electric network and re-operating the existing electrical interconnection lines between the networks in Jordan, Syria and Lebanon to help the Lebanese meet part of their electric energy needs.

Zawati pointed out that a technical meeting that included the stakeholders in the electricity transmission companies in the three countries was held yesterday to prepare for the ministerial meeting, during which the readiness of the electricity networks in these countries was reviewed and the technical and commercial requirements necessary to complete the process of supplying Jordanian electricity to Lebanon were identified.

For his part, Minister of Electricity Ghassan Al-Zamil said: The Syrian side, out of its keenness on the spirit of cooperation with both the Jordanian and Lebanese sides, began from the first moment to take all measures that allow Lebanon to supply electricity through Jordan using the Syrian network.

Al-Zamil added: The workshops of the General Organization for Electricity Transmission and Distribution have begun to rehabilitate the electrical interconnection line that was destroyed by terrorist organizations and to secure the necessary materials for this, despite the difficulties we suffer from as a result of the unjust siege imposed on the Syrian people.

Al-Zamil explained that the necessary information has been collected about the generation plants to be provided to the Jordanian side in order to complete the necessary technical studies related to the synchronous connection between the Syrian and Jordanian networks, which takes a period of three months.

In turn, the Lebanese Minister of Energy and Water, Engineer Walid Fayyad, said that today's meeting aims to enhance energy security in Lebanon and the Arab region by achieving the stability of the energy sector, pointing out that it was agreed on a roadmap to overcome technical obstacles.

A Jordanian-Syrian-Lebanese-Egyptian ministerial meeting was held in Amman last month, during which it was agreed to transfer Egyptian gas and Jordanian electricity to Lebanon through Syrian territory.
