In line with the aspirations to push the administrative units to set up investment projects that serve the local development process, the Umm al-Zaytoun town council in Sweida is implementing an agricultural investment project for eggplant on an area of ​​20 dunums.

The head of Umm al-Zaytoun Council, Qahtan Shalghin, told SANA Economic Bulletin that the land was prepared to launch work on the project last July by equipping and investing the drip irrigation network financed by the governorate’s independent budget as a grant to the council.

He explained that the project is based on a part of the land that was planted with irrigated wheat, which produced about 10 tons, which was delivered to the receiving center in Umm al-Zaytoun mill, with the town council benefiting from its prices to support its budget, while the eggplant cultivation project entered the production stage during the last month with an estimated productivity of 2 tons per acre. Where production secures part of the people's needs at reduced prices, away from the exploitation of merchants.

According to Schelgin, the project is the first of its kind at the level of the administrative units in the governorate. It is one of the fast-producing projects that occupy about 20 job opportunities currently, indicating that production operations in it will continue during the current and next month, with a plan to invest the land in winter by planting it with winter crops such as beans and peas with the continued cultivation of wheat. irrigated, and we plan to expand the irrigation network and increase the cultivated areas. Shelgin pointed out the importance of encouraging investment in agriculture under the conditions of the economic blockade, in a way that achieves self-revenue for the council, which will reflect positively on the services provided to citizens and contribute to stimulating the civil society to reclaim and cultivate lands and popularize the culture of self-sufficiency.

The two workers in the project, Majd Zaidan and Kanan Saab, expressed their satisfaction with the work, as the project provided a job opportunity that secured them a suitable income to support their family in these difficult circumstances.
