"I have the greatest respect for Armin Laschet's decision to resume his position as chairman of the CDU in Germany at a special party congress for a new start in terms of personnel," Althusmann said in a statement that was distributed on Thursday evening.
Hanover - In a very difficult situation, the main burden of this federal election campaign lay with Laschet.
"It would be wrong, however, to hold him solely responsible for the poor result." The CDU would have to rearrange itself thematically.
"As announced by Armin Laschet, we will break new ground."
