As in the federal government, preparations for the formation of a government are picking up speed in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

The northeast SPD of Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig asked for a second exploratory round.

Schwerin / Bergen - The SPD Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has continued its search for a coalition partner for the next five years.

After the start a few days after the state elections on September 26, the exploratory group led by Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig met on Thursday for further discussions with leading representatives of the CDU and the Left.

As reported from the negotiating circles, further talks with the previous coalition partner CDU were initially on the program. In the afternoon there was a meeting with the Left, which was a government partner of the northeast SPD from 1998 to 2006. Nothing was known about the content of the talks by early evening. All three parties referred to the agreed confidentiality.

After its election victory, the SPD had initial talks the week before with the CDU and Leftists and then with the FDP and the Greens. The Greens reacted with a huff to the second round of explorations scheduled by the SPD to form a new state government. “Confidently, they said. At eye level, they said. It reads clearly differently, ”complained the former state party leader and today's member of the Bundestag Claudia Müller in the short message service Twitter. With the Greens and the FDP, two interlocutors of the SPD from round one had not even been informed about the renewed explorations with the CDU and the left.

In the second round, the discussion topics are likely to have become more specific than when they were first scanned after the election.

Common interests and points of conflict between the SPD and the CDU and the left can be derived from the parties' election manifestos.

While the SPD and CDU are quite close in financial policy, the positions, for example, on the SPD's planned inclusion of tariff compliance in the state procurement law, are far apart.

This project is supported by the left, as is the lowering of the voting age to 16 years.

However, the left is pushing for spending increases, for example for additional teachers.

In view of the massive increase in debt caused by the corona, the future state government's scope for this is rather limited.

In the coming week, the SPD state executive wants to decide with which party coalition negotiations will begin. In addition to red-black and red-red, a traffic light would also be possible in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. A three-way alliance between the SPD, the FDP and the Greens is very unlikely, since the two smaller parties are new to the state parliament and, with one exception, the MPs have no parliamentary, let alone government experience.

Schwesig had repeatedly emphasized that she was striving for a stable government with reliable partners.

It is unclear what effects the recent leadership crisis at the CDU will have on their decision.

CDU state chief Michael Sack resigned after the disastrous election result for his party after only one year in office and had also turned down his state parliament mandate in order to remain district administrator of Vorpommern-Greifswald.

Eckhardt Rehberg provisionally leads the Northeast CDU again - until a new state party leader is found.

It is almost impossible for this to happen before the coalition negotiations begin.

Political scientist Muno after TV duel: no trend reversal

According to the Rostock political scientist Wolfgang Muno, CDU top candidate Michael Sack did well in a TV duel with Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD).

However, he was unlikely to have been able to initiate a trend reversal so shortly before the state elections on September 26th.

"Although he made a few points through his appearance as a down-to-earth and authentic politician, he was not able to set any special accents in terms of content," Muno told the dpa in Schwerin on Wednesday.

In the state elections in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania almost two weeks ago, the SPD won a clear election with 39.6 percent of the vote.

The CDU suffered further losses and posted its worst result to date in the northeast with 13.3 percent.

The AfD also lost votes compared to the state election in 2016, but again became the second strongest force in the state parliament with 16.7 percent.

The left also lost and came in at 9.9 percent.

The Greens and the FDP rose and managed to return to parliament with 6.3 and 5.8 percent respectively.
