Pub gardens in Munich should remain open until the end of November.

That is what the Greens and the SPD want.

Overall, the idea is enjoying increasing popularity.

Munich - The pub gardens in Munich * are well received.

If you don't believe it, you can ask Christian Ohlmann.

"People like to come and stay even when the weather is bad," says the owner of the Trachtenvogl café on Reichenbachstrasse.

And there is now more time to linger outside.

Green / Pink List and SPD / Volt would like to allow pavement gardens, city terraces and green electricity-powered radiant heaters until the end of November this year as an exception.

The prerequisite for this is that there are no conflicts with Christmas markets, which can start as early as the end of November.

A motion for the municipal committee on October 12th has been submitted, a majority is considered certain.

With the four additional weeks, the city councils want to at least compensate a little for the losses suffered by the hosts in the Corona * pandemic.

Café gardens in Munich: Additional spaces every year between April and October

That was also the background for the original resolution of the city council *. In May 2020, he had decided on the pub gardens for the corona-plagued restaurateurs for the first time. In September, the committee extended the additional bar areas until March 31, 2021. In May, the city council decided that the bar areas could be open from April to October every year. The city terraces were approved in June at the request of the town hall coalition.

The administration's figures also show that the idea has been well received.

In 2020, around 8,700 new outdoor spaces were created through the pub gardens and the expansion of the bar areas, for which 1037 parking spaces had to make way in the city area.

This year, 681 pavilions have been approved, eliminating 1462 parking spaces.

Including the expansion of the bar area, more than 11,000 additional guest seats have been created.

Green councilor Gudrun Lux: "Coziness instead of parking cars"

"The pub gardens are being extended this year," says Green City Councilor Gudrun Lux. "This means that there is still more space to linger outside during the autumn holidays and beyond."

"And for a month longer, the public space belongs to cosiness and not just parked cars."

But there are sometimes conflicts with parked cars, because the misconception has arisen that drivers can park vehicles in the pub gardens in the second row.

This is basically allowed, as a city spokesman explains when asked.

However, only if there is no disability associated with it.

"If the remaining route becomes too narrow because of the parked vehicles, warnings of 20 euros will be issued in individual cases."

SPD Vice Christian Vorländer: "Even more life in the streets"

SPD Vice Christian Vorländer draws a positive conclusion overall.

“The pub gardens have brought even more life to the streets.” They support the badly battered gastronomy, which is just recovering from the long lockdown months.

"We therefore want to extend the pub gardens and city terraces by a month and also the green electricity-powered radiant heaters for a month longer - so that residents of Munich * can sit further outside."

Incidentally, it works just fine without patio heaters, says Ohlmann.

"I got rid of them a few years ago because I no longer saw how to heat the air." Blankets, he says, are completely sufficient.
