The National Assembly on Thursday, October 7 asked the government for a
"global strategy"
for the production and recycling of sanitary masks, which were sorely lacking at the start of the Covid-19 crisis. A non-binding resolution to this effect from the deputy Isabelle Valentin was adopted unanimously within the framework of a day reserved for texts from the Les Républicains group.
"The relocation and creation of a French production chain for health protection masks now represent a sovereign issue, so that our nation can face possible new pandemics"
, argues the elected representative of Haute-Loire.
“It is also essential to set up a recycling channel for health protection masks, because of ecological issues,” she
underlines.

Despite the efforts to restore a French production, a large part of these masks continues to be imported for reasons of cost, underlined several elected officials. Jean Lassalle (Libertés et Territoires) underlined that the health crisis had highlighted
“strategic flaws”
in this area. For the Communist group, Karine Lebon underlined the need to
“perpetuate the French sector”
, which has gone from 4 producers in January 2020 to around 30 today, by
“making more use of public procurement”
. The Minister of Industry Agnès Pannier-Runacher, however, considered that this resolution
"comes a little late"
given the efforts already made by the government to relaunch the French industry, whose production of 3.5 million masks per week in early 2020 has been
"multiplied by 30"
.
The State has
"set up a French sector in record time, it is now up to us to keep it alive"
, she declared.
