Different characters, little privacy, different habits: living in a shared apartment is a challenge.

It is even more difficult for people with mental illness to face this challenge.

Caritas is therefore dissolving the therapeutic residential group in Miesbach.

Miesbach

- The therapeutic residential group of the social psychiatric service has existed on Wallenburger Strasse for over 41 years.

In July 2022, however, the flat share is to be dissolved.

The previous model was considered a pioneer and luxury of its time when it was created, according to a statement from Caritas.

With today's medical knowledge, however, it is known that this form of living demands too much of mentally ill people in the recovery process.

The decision to dissolve was not made against the residential group, "but for the well-being of each individual," emphasizes Sylvia Vogel, head of the social psychiatric service (SPDI).

There are currently seven men living here together in an area of around 120 square meters. Everyone has their own bedroom. However, there is only one kitchen, one bathroom and one living room. In addition, the apartment has no balcony or garden. The flat share is designed for eight people. At times, men and women lived here mixed together. Even if the decision to dissolve was taken independently of the corona pandemic, the situation has worsened due to exit restrictions and lockdowns. Vogel says: "The consequences of the corona were not easy for the flat share residents either, and the cramped conditions were intensified."

The residents are integrated into a daily structure, work in workshops or additional income from Caritas. You need support in different areas. "For example, when visiting the doctor, shopping, dealing with money and the authorities as well as dealing with your illness," explains Vogel. Once the flat share model was only intended as a temporary solution for phases of reorientation. "So that those affected - after a hospital stay or in a life crisis - can steer their lives back on the right track," said the SPDI director. Often this has become a long-term solution for many, but this does not promote healing. In addition, a lot has changed in psychological work in recent years: "The client is now seen as an individual, with all his needs," says Michaela Ackermann, for example.Qualified pedagogue in the Caritas counseling center for mental health. In October she handed over the management of the group to her colleague, social worker Barbara Schwaiger-Schmid.

Search for one-room apartments for previous flat-share residents

Caritas is now looking for one-room apartments with up to 50 square meters for five of the flat share residents in the Miesbach district.

Ideally, these should be centrally located or with a very good public connection.

Most of those affected have a legal guardian.

The district of Upper Bavaria pays the rent.

The care places in the shared flat are not lost, but are converted into places in the supervised individual residence.

Sylvia Vogel emphasizes: “No dangerous people move into the apartments, but rather severely traumatized and isolated people who need help.” Whether and how things will continue in the current apartment is not yet clear at this point in time.
