Samtens - After a fatal traffic accident on the island of Rügen, the police are investigating a driver from Hesse on suspicion of negligent homicide and negligent bodily harm.
The 60-year-old got into the opposite lane on Thursday with his fully occupied SUV on Bundesstraße 96 near Samtens (Western Pomerania-Rügen) and collided with two oncoming cars, as a police spokesman said on Friday.
An 80-year-old man was fatally injured.
Five other people, including the person who caused the accident from Gießen, came to several clinics with serious injuries.

The 29-year-old was flown to a hospital with serious injuries.

77-year-old died in house fire
In Bad König in the Odenwald district, a man died in a house fire on Monday.
As the police announced, the 77-year-old was rescued lifeless by the fire brigade.
Despite immediate resuscitation, he reportedly died a short time later.
Thanks to the help of attentive neighbors, his wife was rescued from the house and taken to the hospital.

The 80-year-old co-driver, who later died in a clinic, and two 78 and 56-year-old women, who were also seriously injured, sat in the car of the person who caused the accident.
The 49-year-old driver of the first and the 37-year-old driver of the second oncoming car were also seriously injured.
Both come from Western Pomerania.
Two rescue helicopters, four ambulances as well as several emergency doctors and 40 firefighters were in action.
The main traffic axis on the island of Rügen remained closed for around five hours into the evening.
All three cars were almost completely destroyed.
