The deployment of radar cars entrusted to private companies and equipped with non-visible infrared flash will be extended to the entire metropolitan territory in 2022, AFP learned Thursday (October 8) from the Interior Ministry.

The government plans that private radar cars will be able to operate next year in "

all or part

" of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Île-de-France and Occitanie regions, specifies a budget forecast document. .

These four regions were not previously included in the mechanism planned by an interministerial road safety committee in 2015.

714 million euros in revenue

According to Road Safety figures on August 1, 2021, 202 vehicles were driven by law enforcement, 183 by private operators.

The Interior Ministry provides for 714 million euros in revenue from road radars in 2022 (against 760 million in 2019, according to the latest figures available).

Experimentation with private radar cars began between 2018 and 2020 and has been expanding since this year.

The radar vehicles, for the most part of the sedan type, are unmarked, equipped with cameras placed on the front and rear decks in order to automatically detect - and while they are in traffic - speeding, without visible flash.

Private cars only circulate with a driver on board, while in law enforcement cars, an official drives while another raises the maximum authorized speed.

The route of the private radar cars is defined by the prefecture in terms of accident-prone areas.

The transfer of law enforcement to private operators has been completed in four regions, and is continuing in the others.
