Under the combined influence of the northeast monsoon and the tropical cyclone "Lion Rock" in the South China Sea, local winds have gradually strengthened. The Observatory directly issued the No. 3 strong wind signal at 4:40 am today (8th).

The Observatory explained that the common effect does not occur every year, but it is not uncommon. The last time it was the tropical cyclone "Nangka" that affected Hong Kong last year.

The Observatory predicts that the strong wind signal No. 3 will be maintained for a period of time during the day.

The Observatory yesterday (7th) predicted that the tropical depression currently hovering more than 600 kilometers south-southwest of Hong Kong in the central part of the South China Sea will gradually intensify. It will begin to take a more northerly path today (8th), which is closer to Guangdong than previously predicted. Coastal, the strong wind signal No. 3 will be issued this morning to replace the strong monsoon signal.

Due to the combined effects of the northeast monsoon and the tropical depression in the middle of the South China Sea, strong winds to the gale easterly wind along the coast of Guangdong.

Lion Rock is gradually approaching the coast of Guangdong

According to current forecasts, the Lion Rock is gradually approaching the coast of Guangdong today and is strengthening.

Under the combined influence of it and the northeast monsoon, strong winds generally blow along the coast of South China, and gale winds blow occasionally off shore and highlands.

Strong wind signal No. 3 will be maintained today.

Unless Lion Rock strengthens significantly further or takes a path closer to Hong Kong, the chance of issuing a higher tropical cyclone warning signal is lower.

Citizens should stay away from the shore

Heavy rain and squally winds associated with Lion Rock are affecting the coast of Guangdong.

At the same time, there are big waves and swells in the sea, and citizens should stay away from the shore and stop all water activities.

In addition, the storm surge and heavy rain caused by the Lion Rock may flood low-lying areas tonight.

Citizens must remain vigilant and take measures to prevent wind and water flooding.

In the past hour, the highest sustained wind speeds recorded at Ngong Ping, Waglan Island and Tate’s Cairn respectively were 78, 69 and 56 kilometers per hour, and the highest gusts were 105, 75 and 75 kilometers per hour respectively.
