Two cases of bus drivers were attacked last night (Thursday) in the north of the country.

At the central station of Nahariya, a bus driver of Nativ Express, a 54-year-old Druze community from Peqi'in, was attacked with fists by two boys after he remarked to them to wear masks.

He was brought to the Galilee Medical Center with a head and face injury, his condition was defined as mild to moderate and he underwent tests and imaging photographs in the emergency room.

Police were called and soon arrested two suspects in the act, boys aged 13 and 15, and they were taken for questioning at the station.

In another case, which took place almost simultaneously in Kiryat Bialik, an Arab bus driver of the Egged company stopped the bus and went on to comment to 4 of his passengers, young people aged 18-20, not to crack kernels and throw husks on the bus floor and drink vodka while traveling.

He said the four of them started attacking him and also broke windows while using the vodka bottle.

The driver says that his wallet, which includes money and a credit card, was also stolen.

Police were called to the scene.

These cases join the steep rise in driver assaults in recent times.

According to data from the National Organization of Drivers' Organization, which monitors the issue through a comprehensive annual report, in 2020, drivers experienced 3,644 cases of physical violence.

Also, the percentage of drivers who experienced violence during their work that year stands at 40% (with 19% of them reporting having experienced three or more cases).

In practice, though, the number is much higher.

This is because only 47% of cases were reported.

The Organization of Bus Drivers in Israel from the Histadrut said in response to the violence against the bus driver in Jerusalem that: "Only recognizing bus drivers as public employees can save their lives and the lives of passengers, and cause drivers to sit behind bars. Law enforcement agencies must act accordingly. "This snowball in which drivers attack early in the morning and evening. The terror of buses against the drivers must be stopped. The day when a driver kills on the road is closer than ever."
