Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz announced today his resignation from his position after the Public Prosecution charged him with being involved in corruption, bribery and dishonesty scandals with his team and those close to him.
In a speech to reporters, Kurz said, "I announce my resignation from my position to preserve the future of the government coalition and the stability of the country and to avoid a possible political vacuum," stressing that he will "work to refute" all the charges against him in the event that the file is referred to the judiciary.
Kurz indicated that he will take over the position of head of the party's parliamentary bloc after his resignation, while Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg of the People's Party will take over the position of the new chancellor in Austria.
