Although legal aspects are discussed therein, the accusation of free acquisition is not disputed.

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's former Interior Minister Lorenz Caffier (CDU) still owes proof of the alleged purchase of a pistol from the operator of a private shooting range.

As a spokesman for the Rostock public prosecutor said on Friday, there is now a statement from Caffier's lawyer on the matter.

Although legal aspects are discussed therein, the accusation of free acquisition is not disputed.

Rostock - "The statements will now be checked before a decision is made on how to proceed," said Harald Nowack, spokesman for the authorities.

First, the “Schweriner Volkszeitung” reported the receipt of the letter at the end of last week.

The law firm commissioned by Caffier initially did not comment on the case.

The ex-interior minister is being investigated because of the initial suspicion of accepting benefits.

Caffier, who is also a hunter, admitted at the end of 2020 that he had already obtained a pistol in 2018 from an arms dealer and firing range operator, whose system had also been used by the police for shooting training for years.

According to intelligence, the man is said to have had contacts with the right-wing extremist prepper group "Nordkreuz" as early as 2017.

According to Caffier's account, the State Criminal Police Office only became aware of this in May 2019.

Caffier resigned from his position in November 2020 after the acquisition of weapons became known, but retained his mandate in the state parliament.

Four years after the start of investigations into the alleged right-wing extremist prepper network Nordkreuz, proceedings are still ongoing.

Authorities in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania have initiated a total of 21 preliminary investigations against ten people since the beginning.

This emerges from the government's response to a small question from left-wing member of the state parliament, Peter Ritter, which was published on Friday (Drucksache 7/6335).

The value of the weapon was given as around 800 euros.

With such a sum, proceedings against a monetary payment can be discontinued.

However, special standards apply to public officials if they are guilty of accepting benefits.

Thus it says in Section 331 of the Criminal Code: “A public official, a European public official or a person particularly obliged for the public service who demands, allows himself to be promised or accepts an advantage for himself or a third party, is punished with up to three imprisonment Years or a fine. "

The state police had regularly rented the private shooting range for target practice, especially for special forces.

Officials from other federal states also trained there.

Investigations are ongoing in Saxony on the suspicion that ammunition stolen from service stocks was used as payment for private shooting training.

A submachine gun and more than 30,000 rounds of ammunition were found on a former SEK member from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with close contacts to the operator of the firing range.

The man has since been sentenced to a suspended sentence for violating the War Weapons Control Act.
