Coyotes abandon 126 migrants in a trailer in Guatemala

The Guatemalan authorities on Friday located a trailer carrying 126 migrants on a highway in the department of Escuintla, in the south of the country.

After responding to a complaint about an abandoned trailer, agents of the National Civil Police went to kilometer 114 of the road that leads from Cocales to Nueva Concepción.

"Screams and blows are heard coming from the container,"

said the police through their official Twitter account.

Of the total number of immigrants,

109 were from Haiti, 11 from Nepal and 9 from Ghana.

All were transferred to shelters of the Guatemalan Migration Institute.

Refrigerated containers

On their way to the United States, immigrants face deplorable conditions.

Just this Thursday, 652 Central Americans were found, 355 of them minors, crammed into three refrigerated trucks on a highway in Tamaulipas, Mexico.

While on Tuesday another 103 migrants from Central America were detained in the state of Tabasco, in the southeast of the country.

The region has registered a

historic migratory flow

in recent months

with 147,000 undocumented persons detected in the United States from January to August, triple that of 2020, and a record of 212,000 undocumented persons detained in July alone by the Customs and Border Protection (CBP, in English).

The undocumented are easy prey for violence and organized crime.

The pro-immigrant group Human Rights First has evidence of at least 6,356 migrants who have been kidnapped, abused or attacked since January of this year.
