Opinion | The labor market is changing - and posing a challenge to academia Israel today

2021-10-09T21:19:27.761Z

The labor market is changing and requires more and more multidisciplinary knowledge • That is why it is very important to prepare students for industrial life, and to equip them with the set of tools required to work in a diverse team.

The employment market in general and the high-tech world in particular is changing its face.

In advanced industries, engineers, designers, content people, computer experts and more work in the same place.

Again and again there is a strong need for the joint work of people from different disciplines who speak different "languages".

Designers are required to talk to engineers, product managers with programmers, physicians with data processing and big data specialists, and so on.

Multidisciplinary thinking education is essential for anyone who wants to advance in the world of work of the 21st century, and to advance to success requires adaptation of language and discourse in a variety of fields of knowledge.

The academy in the country is not yet optimally preparing its graduates for the multidisciplinary labor market.

Throughout the degree years, students focus primarily on their field of study and are primarily engaged in deepening it.

As a result, students graduating from academia today enter the job market with a lack of knowledge and understanding of the content worlds, which are not closely related to their field of practice, which increases the student's learning curve and integration into the real industrial world.

According to the Innovation Authority, there is a shortage of about 13,000 core workers in high-tech.

The Israeli high-tech industry is so significant that in 2020 its share of exports was about 43% of total Israeli exports.

In addition, according to the OECD report, Israel invests the most in technological innovation in the world in relation to the size of the economy.

Today, more than ever, it is very important to prepare students for industrial life, and to equip them with the set of tools required to work in a diverse team.

Every student should be prepared for a multidisciplinary discourse, for creative thinking, the ability to express himself in social and opinion issues as well as in the planning, management and execution of technological, or social projects that enrich his perspectives.

Equally important is the meeting and teamwork with students from different academic backgrounds.

A revolution in thinking and attitude creates students of a new kind: with openness and understanding in multidisciplinary work environments.

These graduates will develop diverse employment opportunities and they will be able to develop into innovative and futuristic fields.

The revolution must begin within academic institutions.

Attempts are now being made to produce multidisciplinary mainly in the fields of spirit and society, but few of them also integratively combine entrepreneurship and innovation technology under one academic entity according to a holistic work plan.

Why is it so challenging for higher education institutions?

Mainly because broad-minded people with multiple fields of knowledge are required to form a bridge between the fields of science and technology, between design and computers and the humanities and social sciences, who will be willing to act as spearheads in changing habits and demonstrate themselves through open and flexible thinking.

The corona has taught us an important lesson in changing the world order and priorities in it.

It seems that without mental flexibility it will be difficult to succeed.

We at the academy must adapt ourselves to this thinking, and the School of Multidisciplinary Studies provides the student with these tools, while operating in a changing, diverse and innovative environment.
