Dr. Nisreen Khazem, a hematologist and oncologist, recommends that women should see their doctor when they notice any change in one of the breasts, such as a change in skin, size, shape, color, or texture, or when feeling a lump, as it may be an indication of breast cancer.
While many other signs indicate the infection of the most common cancer in women, Dr. Khazem shows the necessity of women's commitment to early detection, that is, before any symptoms and signs appear, which guarantees shortening the treatment period, improving its results, and raising recovery rates.
Early detection begins at young ages through self-examination and aims to discover any changes that may occur in the breast, and it is in various ways while lying down, in front of the mirror or during the shower. Which is not revealed by clinical and self-examination.
Khazem stated that the treatment plan depends on the stage of the disease, the type of cancer cell and the patient's desire, and includes surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, hormonal, immunological and biological treatments, stressing that psychological treatment and emotional support are essential to the success of other measures.
The specialist alerts women to the presence of factors that increase the risk of breast cancer and can be controlled, such as obesity, lack of physical activity, exposure to radiation during puberty, taking oral contraceptives in large quantities, and excessive alcohol consumption, while there are predisposing factors that cannot be controlled, such as sex. One in men, advanced age, family history on the mother's side, early menstruation, late menopause, and no or few children.
The month of October is dedicated globally to raising awareness of the early detection of breast cancer, which records about 2.3 million new cases annually.
