Russian journalists Dmitriy Muratov and Filipino journalist Maria Ressa have been awarded the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to protect freedom of expression.
"The committee decided to award the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize to Maria Ressa and Dmitriy Muratov for their efforts to protect freedom of expression, which is a prerequisite for democracy and lasting peace," the Norwegian Nobel Committee said in a statement.
Thus, Muratov becomes the third person of Russian nationality to win the Nobel Peace Prize after Andrei Sakharov, the former President of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev.
The Nobel Peace Prize will be awarded on December 10, the anniversary of the death of Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel, who established the prestigious prizes in his will in 1895.
