The head of the energy company RWE, Markus Krebber, calls for the construction of new gas-fired power plants to secure the power supply in Germany. "We need around 20 to 30 gigawatts of new gas-fired power plants in Germany," said Krebber in a podcast published by Wirtschaftswoche on Friday. That would correspond to up to a doubling of the previous capacities.

Düsseldorf - The installed capacity of gas-fired power plants in Germany was around 30 gigawatts in 2019.

Krebber sees gas-fired power plants as a transition technology towards electricity supply exclusively from renewable energy sources.

They can be converted to run on hydrogen at a relatively low cost.

"We also need a very clear plan for the gas-fired power plants, how they will ultimately be CO2-free and how they will be green," said Krebber.

The energy suppliers would “have no desire to have the discussion we are having today about coal about gas again in ten years”.

Gas-fired power plants are currently under considerable price pressure.

According to the Federal Network Agency, electricity generation with gas in August was around 55 percent below that of the same month last year.

The high gas prices made the operation of the gas-fired power plants less profitable.

Production from hard coal, on the other hand, is more competitive again despite the increased costs for CO2 certificates.
