The 368th onion market in Weimar began on Friday with the traditional cutting of an onion cake - for the second time under pandemic conditions.
That means: It is smaller than usual again. Nevertheless, almost all hotel rooms in the city are fully booked.
"If you decide now, you can definitely still book a room, but more from the four-star segment" - that is, high-priced, said a spokeswoman for the marketing company of the city of Weimar at the beginning of the three-day market and city festival.
Weimar - Even houses that were generally below this level would have increased their rates again this weekend.
The onion market is the oldest and most famous folk festival in the region.
One expects around 125,000 visitors more than last year by the end of the weekend, said a city spokesman.
That would be around 200,000 guests.
Usually around 350,000 visitors cavort at the Weimar onion market.
Compared to 2020, when the market was reduced to the historical core due to the corona, the program announced by the city administration is larger again: stages with a music program, onion market for children, the Weimar city run for the sporty, wine festival, gastronomy and dealers.
In order to equalize the volume, the market area was made smaller again and the stalls were built less close to one another.
160 sales and snack stands were set up this year.
At the last market before the corona pandemic, there were 500.
