The coolest neighborhoods in Latin America and Spain on the TimeOut list

Although the first "coolest" neighborhoods on TimeOut's list are in Copenhagen, Hong Kong, Dakar and Budapest, six remain in Latin America and two in Spain. We tell you what they are.

Time Out surveyed 27,000 residents of cities around the world to compile its list of the coolest neighborhoods (in English, attractive or fashionable) in 2021.

In this new index, the magazine not only took into account its priorities from previous years - food, drink, nightlife and culture - to arrive at its list of the 49 coolest neighborhoods, but decided to go more there this time.

By 2021, Time Out said that "community spirit, resilience, sustainability [are] just as important, especially if we're going to come out of this pandemic with things we can be proud of and tell the rest of the world about."

"This year, after having emerged from intensive renovation, the center (also known as La Candelaria) has become a haven of leafy boulevards, bike lanes, community-run 'pocket parks', with hundreds of trees new planted, "says Time Out.

The magazine recommends visitors "the perfect day", having a traditional hot breakfast near Plaza Botero, then taking a walk to see the sculptures, walking along Avenida La Playa, among other plans.

"Why is downtown the coolest neighborhood in CDMX in 2021?" Asks TimeOut.

The answer is varied: "the museums joined forces and launched Contigo en la Distancia: a page where they shared virtual reality tours", "LGBTQ + bars such as the Marrakesh Hall turned their previously crowded spaces into kitchens", and, in general, into In the midst of the pandemic, you can now enjoy the center without being overcrowded.

"Forget about supermarkets and shopping centers: this is the area of ​​independent bookstores, designer boutiques, restaurants, theaters and live music venues": this is how the magazine describes the Gràcia neighborhood, one of the most traditional in Barcelona.

Time Out recommends going to specialty coffee shops, touring galleries and exhibition spaces, as well as shopping for independent producers.

Saúde, Rio de Janeiro

In the Saúde neighborhood, on the Rio de Janeiro beach, Time Out recommends admiring the view from Morro da Conceição, eating an Afro-Brazilian lunch and drinking capirinhas.

"Visitors will discover charming old bars, beautiful Portuguese architecture and fascinating places like Pedra do Sal, whose history intertwines slavery, African heritage and samba," says the magazine.

Barranco, Lima

"With its 19th century palaces, murals, palm trees, cevicherías, cocktail bars, street markets and art galleries, Barranco is easily the most bohemian neighborhood in Lima (also the coolest at the moment)," says Time Out.

Highlight its cliff views of the Pacific Ocean, bike lanes, and typical - and delicious - Peruvian food.

Chamberí, Madrid

TimeOut is categorical about the coolest neighborhood in the capital of Spain: "Few neighborhoods capture the eclectic spirit of Madrid like Chamberí."

"Homey but central, crossed by wide avenues and charming alleys, and endless museums, concert halls and excellent sports facilities, Chamberí has ​​emerged from the pandemic in all its splendor," he adds.
