Today, the plastic artist “sculptor” Mustafa Jamil Shakhis passed away at the age of 65, making his passing a loss for the cultural and artistic circles in Lattakia.

And the late belongs to a family that was distinguished by art of all kinds, such as literature, poetry, music and drawing, where he was attached to the art of sculpture 40 years ago and was tutored by his uncle, the writer and music teacher Abdel Qader Rabia, who took from him the professionalism of manufacturing the oud instrument known as the “Rabia” oud. He also learned the secrets of wood from him. What made him fond of this material was his first sculptural work at the age of thirty.

The artist's work varied in style to include different sculptural schools of classicism, surrealism, cubism and abstraction, to combine in some of them several schools with one work, in addition to his interest in Arabic calligraphy and the blending of crafts and formation, between classicism and composition.

With the progress of years and the accumulation of experience, the late presented a group of sculptural works on sandstone, limestone and hard stone, but his main passion remained related to wood.

In general, the artist’s personal style relied on the uniqueness and distinction, whether in the idea or the design method, to create a special imprint and identity through his work on the third dimension of sculptural works that require a lot of imagination and horizon in design, craftsmanship and accuracy in implementation, in addition to the purposeful idea and success in collecting these components to produce a successful and innovative artwork .

The artist, Mustafa Shakhees, was born in the city of Latakia in 1956. He is a member of the Syrian Plastic Artists Union, Latakia branch. He is dedicated to sculpture and has participated in most national and federal art exhibitions and private galleries individually and collectively for more than 35 years.
