Gloria Cecilia Narváez, the Colombian Franciscan nun who was kidnapped by a group affiliated with al Qaeda in East Africa in 2017 in southern Mali, was released, the Malian Presidency reported this Saturday in a statement.
He added that the release was the result of more than four years and eight months of "combined efforts by various intelligence agencies."
The Presidency of Mali recognized "the courage and bravery of the nun" in a post on her Facebook account.
Sister Gloria Cecilia Narváez Argoty was abducted by an Al Qaeda-affiliated group in East Africa in February 2017 in southern Mali.

For its part, the Colombian government celebrated the release through a statement from the vice president and foreign minister, Marta Lucía Ramírez.
"We are very happy and we appreciate this happy result for our compatriot, his family, his friends and for all Colombians," he said.

Narváez was a missionary near the border with Burkina Faso for six years, before being kidnapped on February 7, 2017. She was deprived of liberty in the village of Karangasso, in southern Mali, the Colombian Foreign Ministry reported at the time.
