During an opera performance: an actor was killed at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow

Authorities have opened an investigation into the death of a 37-year-old actor killed in an accident that occurred while changing a set in a theater in the Russian capital.

Following the tragedy, the show was immediately stopped and the audience was asked to leave

An actor at the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow was killed yesterday (Saturday) during an opera, the theater announced, one of the most prestigious in Russia.

The accident on stage occurred while changing the set in "Sedko", an opera by Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov.

"The opera was stopped immediately and the audience was asked to leave," the theater said in a statement released by Interfax.

Authorities in Moscow have said they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of the 37-year-old actor, whose identity has not been released.

Interfax quoted a source as saying that the player was crushed by a ramp during the change of scenery.

Sources told the RIA and TASS news agency that he was killed by a set item that fell on him.

This is not the first tragedy in the theater: in 2013, a senior violinist was killed in a fall into the orchestra pit.
