In the ultra-Orthodox-Sephardic world, the weekend marked eight years since the death of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, whose day of remembrance fell last Friday.
The chairman of the Shas party, MK Aryeh Deri, called before the memorial day for the masses to light soul candles in his memory, and this has also been done in many places in Israel. "Eight years have passed since we lost a great man.
"All the people of Israel feel the lack of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef," Deri noted.
The person who also marked the memorial day was former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
"Rabbi Ovadia was a great arbiter in our generation, and his influence on Jewish law will last for generations. I remember him from our many meetings over the years. Rabbi Ovadia had tremendous knowledge of our heritage, along with a tremendous commitment to the Torah of Israel and the people of Israel.
"I have always been impressed by his special sensitivity to help the weak in society. I especially remember how after the Yom Kippur War he mobilized bravely to solve the problem of anchoring in war," Netanyahu wrote on his Facebook account.
"I miss him. I miss him and so many of the people of Israel, who never cease to remember him as one of the most significant figures in the history of our people. May his memory be blessed."
