Are ticket prices rising in Hellabrunn?

This is exactly what the supervisory board should decide at the end of November.

Because financially the zoo is doing badly, the city will have to pay around 5.6 million euros in subsidies.

Munich - The bankrupt vulture hovers over the zoo: Because of the closings required by the pandemic, Hellabrunn Zoo has hardly generated any income, so there is a gap in the budget this year as well.

The city council is expected to approve a grant of around 5.6 million euros on Tuesday.

The supervisory board will decide at the end of November whether ticket prices will be increased in the future.

Due to the corona pandemic that broke out around the world, the zoo had to close in the meantime.

When the zoo was allowed to reopen, this only succeeded with extensive requirements and a limitation of the number of visitors.

For a longer period of time there was only online ticketing, closed animal houses and compulsory testing.

Since September 6th, the zoo has been able to open normally again in compliance with the 3G regulation.

But that's not enough to make up for the losses.

Financial distress: Hellabrunn closes bat grotto and buries parking garage plans

Hellabrunn generates its sales in the months of March / April to mid-September.

Because of the restrictions and also because of the sometimes bad weather, the zoo was not able to cover costs in 2021 either.

Last year the city council approved a grant to make up for the shortfall.

Although the zoo made profits in 2017 and 2018, these reserves have been used up, for example for construction projects such as the polar world.

The zoo has already cut spending.

Renovations were postponed indefinitely (Kea facility) and the bat grotto was closed.

The project “Greened parking deck Siebenbrunner Straße” was taken off the wall.

Administration: "Zoo must improve the revenue situation"

The administration nevertheless assumes that Hellabrunn will not be able to generate any significant surpluses in the next few years under the current conditions.

"In order to keep the zoo in its current form in the long term, the revenue situation must be improved - especially against the backdrop of permanently rising fixed costs", it says literally in a non-public document that our newspaper has available.

In other words, the entrance fees would have to be increased, otherwise the zoo would also be dependent on subsidies from the city in the future.

The subject is not that trivial.

Munich's * zoo is the cheapest zoo in the German-speaking world when it comes to zoos of comparable size.

But according to the statutes, it has to offer “popular entrance fees”.

The board of directors is to decide on November 24th whether the ticket prices will be increased.
