A passenger is in custody after exhibiting "suspicious and erratic behavior" aboard the American Eagle flight.

An American Eagle flight that arrived at LaGuardia Airport in New York City on Saturday afternoon was landed on the runway due to a possible safety issue, according to a statement from American Airlines.

The flight, operated as American Airlines Flight 4817, was evacuated "in response to passenger reports of suspicious and erratic passenger behavior," according to a statement from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

"Law enforcement and first responders met with the aircraft and the passenger involved in the incident has been detained," Republic Airways said.

The aircraft declared an emergency on Saturday "in response to passenger behavior near the end of the flight," according to a statement from the airline.

Passengers told Port Authority Police that at one point during the flight, the passenger took their luggage and freaked out, Port Authority spokesman Thomas Topousis told CNN.

There were 76 passengers and six attendants on board the flight, Topousis added.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul wrote in a tweet that officials "are monitoring the situation and there is no reason to believe there is any danger to New Yorkers at this time."

Operations at the airport proceeded normally after the incident, according to a Saturday night tweet from the airport's official Twitter account.

"The previous incident involving a troublesome American Airlines / Republic Airways passenger and a passenger evacuation has been resolved," the tweet read.

A passenger described what happened

Early on Saturday, the pilot alerted the authorities on the ground of the incident and when the plane landed on a runway, an "exit was made on the runway to remove the passengers from the plane," according to the previous statement from the Port Authority. .

Investigators interviewed the passenger who was acting suspiciously, as well as several passengers who were sitting closest to that person to learn more about what happened on board the flight, the Port Authority added.
