Schleswig-Holstein's Prime Minister Daniel Günther (CDU) has spoken out in favor of a swift repositioning of the CDU this year after the Union's defeat in the Bundestag election. "Overall, we need a new start and should therefore re-elect our entire board - in the course of this year," said the Union politician at the request of the "Welt". However, he himself does not want to run for the party chairmanship. "I'm happy to help with the reorganization of the federal government, but not in the front line," said Günther.

The presidium and board of the CDU will meet this Monday in Berlin to discuss how to proceed after the announced withdrawal of party leader Armin Laschet.

Günther criticized in this context that »in the debate about the reorganization of the party only men always play a role.

That bothers me extremely. "

Schäuble speaks out against surveying members

Most recently, the names Friedrich Merz, Norbert Röttgen, Ralph Brinkhaus and Jens Spahn were named as candidates for the successor to Armin Laschet.

The extent to which the CDU members should be involved in the election of a new chairman is also being discussed.

Wolfgang Schäuble, who had made a significant contribution to Armin Laschet as candidate for chancellor, considers a member survey to be the wrong approach.

"The CDU Germany has no better organ to consider the basis than the party congress," said Schäuble on Sunday at a literature festival in Hamburg.

A vote among members could be influenced by opinion polls, for example.

At previous party congresses, delegates had voted on the party leadership.

Armin Laschet had recently indirectly announced his retirement from the office of party chairman.

However, he wanted to help in the search for a new CDU boss and "moderate" the process.

With Laschet as candidate for chancellor, the union of the CDU and CSU only received around 24 percent of the vote.

The SPD became the strongest force and is now exploring a possible traffic light coalition in talks with the FDP and the Greens.
