The Battle for the Budget: "Expect the Unexpected" | Israel today

2021-10-10T20:36:45.010Z

Despite the bill approved on first reading, opposition leader Netanyahu and Shas chairman Aryeh Deri will try to torpedo the approval of the state budget • Senior Likud official: "I would not suggest the coalition think the majority is in their pocket"

Opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu has decided to fight for budget approval and try to torpedo it at all costs, despite the coalition's and the opposition's assessment that the state budget will eventually go through a final reading.

Leading the battle for the budget are Netanyahu himself and Shas chairman Aryeh Deri.

On the target of the two: MKs from the last ranks of the coalition parties, as well as the Arab factions RAAM and the joint list.

Despite the low chance, a senior Likud official said yesterday: "I would not suggest to the coalition leaders that the majority needed for the budget is in their pocket."

Next month, the state budget will be brought to the Knesset for approval in the second and third readings.

So far the various political scenarios have estimated that the necessary majority will be found, and that the days of the government will be extended.

This is because from the moment the budget is approved, the ways to overthrow the government are shrinking and becoming more difficult.

The assessment that there will be a majority in the budget was strengthened when in the government, as well as in the first reading in the Knesset, the budget was approved almost without difficulty.

The political system also estimates that despite the narrow majority the government has approved, with a majority of only 60 MKs, some members of the joint list will provide a safety net to the government if it has difficulty obtaining a majority for the budget, to prevent its overthrow.

But in recent days, the opposition leader has decided to go into battle, and not allow the budget to pass without a fight.

The person coordinating the efforts is himself and the chairman of Shas, Aryeh Deri.

It is estimated that after rehabilitation from swearing in on the death of his mother, MK Yariv Levin will join the team to fight the budget.

Persuasion Tools: Surveys

Netanyahu, through members of his bureau and Likud officials, is currently trying to locate MKs from the back benches of the parties have a future, a right and a new hope and persuade them to oppose the budget. The Likud estimates that since this is a vote that could overthrow the government, if there are defectors who oppose the budget, the parties will work to replace them by returning the ministers to the Knesset within the framework of Norwegian law.

Alongside these efforts, Deri met with officials in the Arab parties.

With the joint list, Deri is trying to reach an agreement that they will not provide a safety net for the transfer of the budget, while with representatives of the RAAM, Deri is trying to lead to a crisis between them and the coalition - which may lead to their last-minute opposition.

MK Ophir Akunis referred to the talks taking place, saying that "there are talks with MKs in the coalition who will vote against the budget and overthrow the government to advance new elections. The Likud is significantly stronger in all polls, expect the unexpected."

On the other hand, MK Yoav Kish said that “the budget transfer is probably a fait accompli.

"The current struggle is to save some of its bad items, such as raising the salaries of soldiers, which was promised by Finance Minister Lieberman himself as Finance Minister, and then he returned."
