We all know that it's not an easy task to remove stains and bad odors from the carpet, but fans of cleaning guru Mrs. Hinch have a surprising, quick and cheap solution that you probably already have at home so even jumping into a supermarket to buy it you do not need.

The carpet discussion began when Facebook user Dave Robert contacted the Facebook page "Mrs. Hitch's Cleaning Tips" for advice on how to get rid of the bad smell that pervaded his carpet.

He wrote in a message: "My rug smells bad. I have a very large rug in the living room. Definitely saw better days, but still looks good overall. Unfortunately it smells like a dog. Wet dog!".

Dave tried to dissipate the smell in several ways without success: "I used the liquid to clean the carpets, washed it a few days ago and left it outside to dry. It stinks even more. I smelled it in a fabric perfume but the good smell passed pretty quickly and the wet dog smell came back. "With a shampoo for cleaning carpets and even that still has not been able to remove the smell. Do you have any ideas please, before it is thrown in the trash?".

The Facebook post was quickly flooded with advice from nearly 100 cleaning patients, most of whom recommended one useful, quick and convenient solution: baking soda.

Tammy Granny wrote: "Sprinkle baking soda on the carpet, leave it like this for an hour and vacuum. I just did it for my rugs, I have two dogs - the smell is gone."

User Siva Murray agreed: "I bought a second-hand sofa that smelled of dog odor. I used baking soda, left it on for the night and passed a vacuum cleaner on it in the morning."

Nicole Peer added: "Baking soda and a few drops of essential oil. Leave for the night. Suck the next day and the smell will go away."
