The new Corona icon should have a permanent place in the St. Corona Chapel and give the believers support, during the corona pandemic but also beyond.

Now it has been ceremoniously handed over.

Sauerlach - At an ecumenical liturgical service on Sunday, Archpriest Apostolos Malamoussis and Archimandrite Georgios Siomos, both from the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Germany (GOM), presented the Corona icon to Pastor Josef Steinberger from Sauerlach. Almost 100 believers, including the Sauerlach mayor Barbara Bogner, came to the small forest clearing next to the chapel for the occasion. An event of supraregional importance: Bayerischer Rundfunk also sent a team to Arget.

The Argeter Chapel connects an important event with the Orthodox Greeks. “It was rebuilt 200 years ago after it was destroyed. Just as Greece revived as a state 200 years ago with the beginning of the liberation struggle against the Ottoman yoke. Incidentally, Corona is called on all sorts of matters, for example when it comes to money. She also serves as the patroness of the butcher's trade. And their advocacy should even help with toothache. So far, epidemics and viruses have not been part of their area of responsibility.

The Sankt-Corona Chapel has achieved a certain fame in the past two years of the pandemic and has been a regular excursion and refuge for many believers. “Whenever I've been here, I've been calmer than before. When I've seen the lights burn, all the people who come by here - that's just good for me, ”said Elisabeth Müller, for example. The 82-year-old from Oberhaching now comes here regularly with her friends, she says.

On March 15, 2020, Apostolos Malamoussis and Archpriest Georgios Vletsis from the Greek Orthodox parish of All Saints' Church in Munich visited the St. Corona Chapel. Malamoussis then expressed the wish to have an icon of Saint Corona made and then donate it to the Saint Corona chapel. Paschalis Dougalis, cantor of the Greek Orthodox Church of All Saints in Munich and a Byzantine icon painter, was finally commissioned to paint a corresponding icon. This was completed last year, but a handover with a public ceremony had not been possible due to the pandemic.

Incidentally, the icon Corona has absolutely nothing to do with the pandemic of the same name.

On the altar panel of the Argeter Forest Chapel, the story of the saint's passion is depicted: As a 16-year-old, according to the legend, she had to watch as her husband Victor was killed for his faith.

She herself was also sentenced to death and tied between two palm trees.

When these fell apart, it tore her body in two.

It is said to have been around AD 175.

Pastor Josef Steinberger said during the service: “I admire the martyrs for their determination and steadfastness.

And I'm not sure if I could be that strong too. "
