MK Yuli Edelstein said tonight (Monday) that he will run for the Likud presidency against chairman Benjamin Netanyahu, and demanded that primaries be held in the party. In an interview with News 12 Speaker declared the former Minister of Health intentions and said that as long as Netanyahu heads the party - Dina remain on the opposition benches.
"It is time to replace floppy," Edelstein said. "He was a good prime minister, but he can not be elected More. It is either me - or a dangerous government headed by Lapid with Meretz and Ra'am. He noted that "elections are not necessary, there are 70 right-wing seats in the Knesset, it is possible to form a government under my leadership in this Knesset." He added: "In no case will I resign from the Likud. I hope that the other candidates will declare this."
According to the Likud constitution, the primaries for the party leadership and the list are held after the announcement of general elections, but in recent years Netanyahu has used to advance their deadline in order to receive backing and support in advance.
Even after the formation of the new government and the loss of power, Netanyahu wanted to advance the primaries and hold them immediately, but he encountered opposition from senior Likud leaders at the head of the movement, Israel Katz and Haim Katz, and was stopped.
Well, at this point there is no scheduled primaries date for the Likud anytime soon.
Following Edelstein's remarks, Netanyahu's entourage said that "the Likud is a democratic party. Benjamin Netanyahu was re-elected Likud leader by a huge majority of 72.5% just less than two years ago. Anyone interested in running for leadership is welcome to do so in the primaries."
