The President of the Republic has just invited hundreds of young people from the African continent to come and talk with him in Montpellier. The initiative was certainly original in an attempt to forge better relations with young people who care less and less about France in their hearts. But she was also curious, to say the least. Can you imagine Joe Biden calling a summit in the United States with representatives of South American civil society? Or Vladimir Putin bypassing European heads of state and government to invite students, intellectuals, artists and entrepreneurs from the Old Continent to Moscow? Critics would fuse. The diplomatic crisis would not be far away. In Africa, no one has flinched.
We can draw a thousand interpretations from it.
The discrediting of African politicians is one of them.
The attraction that the former colonial power still exerts on the other side of the Mediterranean is another.
Which is not the least of the paradoxes to underline.
