For four years, the right has fought not to be caught in pincers between Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen.
This pincer had a partly virtual character insofar as the exodus of ex-RPR or ex-UMP voters in the direction of the FN then of the National Rally had ceased for several years, and that, symmetrically, the prospect of a campaign centered on the results of the outgoing one could give hope to the candidate one day supported by LR to recover from disappointed macronism.
The unexpected irruption of Eric Zemmour, and the predictable affirmation of Édouard Philippe complicate the game because both create the possibility of new bridges.

Zemmour thus squarely posed as "candidate of the RPR".
The parallel has been mocked by those for whom any historical reference - the RPR as such merged into the UMP twenty years ago - will be foreign to the youngest.
And it has been denounced by those for whom one cannot at the same time grant extenuating circumstances
