The blow of car thefts in Israel: The

economy is gradually recovering after the corona closures last year - and it turns out that car thieves have also returned to full force.

A study conducted by Ituran found a 32% increase in car theft incidents in the third quarter of 2021, compared to the same period last year.

It also turns out that there is an increasing and intensifying phenomenon compared to previous years, of passing stolen vehicles through breaches in the separation fence.

Along the fence there are dozens of loopholes, which the thieves use to transfer the vehicles to the PA areas - with an emphasis on the Qalqaliya area, the Tulkarm sub-district and the Modi'in sector.

The study, which took place on 650,000 vehicles in Israel, showed that in the third quarter of 2021, in one of the four theft incidents, the car key was found in the thief's possession.

Over a third of the incidents were in the violent car burglary method, and attempted driving using hacked car computers.

In 18% of the incidents there were coding events through the OBD socket in the vehicle, in 11% of the incidents by towing and loading, in 2% of the incidents the vehicle was robbed by its owner or a key was left in the vehicle, and in 8% of cases it could not be determined.

The study also showed that in analyzing the thieves' preferred areas, the Gush Dan area led the table of thefts in Israel, with 36% of all theft attempts.

It is followed by the Sharon region with 28%, the southern region with 10%, the lowland region with 8%, the Jerusalem sub-district with 10%, the northern region with 6% and Judea and Samaria with 2%.

Vehicles that had the highest frequency of attempted thefts in the first half of the year: Jeeps and Jeeps - 38%, private vehicles - 25%, commercial vehicles - 10%, trucks - 4%, motorcycles - 21% and vehicles - In the third quarter of 2021, car thieves focused on moving the stolen vehicles to the cities of Ramallah and Tulkarm, which are located near the center of the country, through checkpoints and loopholes in the separation fence.

Ituran led to the arrest of 98 squads of car thieves, whose arrest will save the Israeli economy about NIS 533 million over a period of one year.

The company notes that the arrest of squads suspected of car thefts in real time, helps a lot in the process of convicting the suspects, and imprisoning them for extended periods.
