"The restoration of the entire Hellerau festival area in accordance with the requirements of historical monuments has made a significant contribution to strengthening Hellerau's application as a UNESCO World Heritage Site," explained Mayor Dirk Hilbert. In the words of Mayor of Culture Annekatrin Klepsch, the city also wants to remember the use of the buildings during the Nazi dictatorship as part of the renovation. For this purpose, a research contract has already been awarded to the Institute for Saxon History and Folklore.

The Festspielhaus was built in 1911 based on a design by Heinrich Tessenow.

The Swiss composer Émile Jaques-Dalcroze founded an educational institution for rhythm and movement here and made the green suburb of Dresden famous.

Guests came from all over Europe, including Franz Kafka, Rainer Maria Rilke, Stefan Zweig, Sergej Rachmaninow and Upton Sinclair.

The First World War ended the glory days.

At the end of the 1930s, the temple of the Muses was converted into a police school.

The Waffen-SS later used the buildings and grounds.

After 1945 the festival hall served the Soviet Army as a military hospital and later as a barracks and sports hall for paratroopers.

In 2006 it was reopened after extensive renovation.
