A tanker loaded with 1,300 tons of diesel got stuck in the Rhine on Sunday evening.

It could only be recovered on Monday morning.

St. Goar - On Sunday evening (October 10th) around 8 p.m. a tanker got stuck in the Rhine near St. Goar in Rhineland-Palatinate.

Also on board: five crew members and 1,300 tons of diesel.

The tanker was recovered on Monday morning (October 11).

The reason for this was that it had to stop because of an oncoming ship, as Peter Knopp from the St. Goar water police announced on Monday.

A “nautical error” was pointed out in the police press release on Sunday evening.

As a result, the rudder power was lost and the current drove the ship onto a rocky middle distance, where it ultimately got stuck.

It was said that this did not result in a leak.

“The fairway on the left bank of the Rhine was closed due to the festivities,” the police said.

Shipping therefore had to temporarily stop the fairway on the right bank of the Rhine.

The ship could only be salvaged in daylight on Monday morning.

The five-person crew had to spend the night on board.

Two tugs were finally able to recover the tanker without damage to the ship and without injuries.

The tanker has been checked and is now back on its original route to Switzerland, as Knopp announced.

The accident is reminiscent of the incident in the Suez Canal, where the container ship "Ever Given" got stuck and paralyzed the world economy for a long time.
