Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador confirmed today that the US energy trading company Trafigura is among the major foreign companies involved in fuel smuggling outside the country.
"We discovered that some of these famous foreign companies are transporting smuggled fuel and the import permit for the US company Trafigura has been suspended," Reuters quoted Obrador as saying during a press conference, noting that Mexico's attorney general's office is looking into the case.
The Mexican President's statements represent a new development in the case of investigations into the file of corruption networks, which include some of the largest international energy trading companies in several Latin American countries.
Last month, the Mexican Energy Ministry suspended four fuel import permits granted to Trafigura.
