A building of cultural-historical importance in the history of Hebrew settlement in the Harod Valley survived demolition at the end of a six-year struggle. This, after the local committee for planning and construction in the northern district received the plan of the Council for the Preservation of Heritage Sites - according to which it will be possible to widen the Afula-Beit She'an road (Route 71), without having to demolish the historic building of the Beit She'an-Harod transport cooperative at Tel Junction -Yosef.

The building served the transport cooperative that operated since 1942 in Kibbutz Beit Hashita, and a small number of kibbutzim from the Afula, Beit She'an and Jordan Valley areas participated in it. The job of the truck drivers was to transport the agricultural produce from the valley to the cities. The song "Our car is big and green", on the kibbutz truck leading the valley's fruit to the city, reflects well the spirit of the cooperative transportation corporation. The building itself was erected at the end of the War of Independence, and was the first cooperative enterprise of all the agricultural settlements in the valley.

Six years ago, plans were submitted to widen the road, and the demolition of the building was approved.

Following a struggle waged by the Council for the Preservation of Heritage Sites, it was decided to reconsider the matter, and now it has been decided that the structure will remain intact and not be demolished.

In an article previously published in Walla! Following the decision to demolish the building, Uri Ben-Zioni, director of the Northern District of the Heritage Sites Preservation Council, said, "The cultural-historical importance of the Jewish settlement cooperative in the valley cannot be underestimated. The kibbutz - its connection to Tnuva Dairy, the beginning of a regional organization, the great pride of the kibbutz enterprise that led its produce to the whole country: all of these are in this place. "

Curator Avital Efrat, who researched the architectural work of Shmuel Bickels, known for kibbutz architecture in Israel and who also designed the cooperative building, also said at the time that "this building contains so many layers in terms of the importance of the story of settlement in the valley." In her work, Efrat described the building as "industrial, consisting of a row of seven adjacent garages, each covered with a barrel roof (from the word" barrel ").The most elegant detail in the building is the gutter that drains the roofs in a round ditch. "

On the Afula-Beit She'an road, there is only one travel lane in each direction, and it is too narrow to accommodate the heavy traffic that passes through it for many hours throughout the day, and especially on vacations and holidays when many travelers come to this area. Many road accidents also occur on this road and in recent years a widespread public struggle has arisen in the valley area, calling on the government to repair the traffic hazards and widen the road to two lanes in each direction.

In the alternative plan presented by the Heritage Sites Preservation Council, it has been shown that Route 71 can be widened without the need to demolish the structure. The Gilboa Regional Council, in which the site is located, also supported this plan.

"Although the demolition of the building has already been approved, we insisted on presenting an alternative plan in which we showed that the road could be widened without demolishing the building," Ben-Zioni said. He said, "The next step will be the preservation and restoration of the building that is in poor condition. In the planning: restoration of the facade and replacement of the tiles. This is a complex operation because they no longer produce rounded tiles as they are on the roof of the building. "
