Ankara provided intelligence • Sami Jassim, who was hiding in a rebel-held area of Syria, was tempted to cross into Turkey • where Iraqi security forces were waiting for him, who arrested him - and took him on a military plane to their country.

The Turkish intelligence agency (MİT) has helped Iraq capture Sami Jassim, who was the deputy to ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, in northwestern Syria.

This was reported by the Reuters news agency from three security sources.

According to the report, the intelligence in Ankara provided Baghdad with valuable information that greatly aided the Iraqi operation that was carried out, exceptionally, outside the country.

Senior Iraqi and Turkish government officials have declined to comment, but this intelligence cooperation may also indicate that Ankara is backed by Baghdad in its activities against Kurdish terrorist organizations in northern Iraq.

"Jassim was in northwestern Syria and was captured with the help of local security forces," said a senior security official in the area - apparently referring to the pro-Turkish rebels who control the region.

Two Iraqi sources added that "he was arrested in Turkey shortly after he was tempted to cross the border."

According to one of the Iraqi sources who spoke with Reuters, Iraqi intelligence followed Jassim for several months.

"Information from an ISIS prisoner arrested last year contributed to his capture," another Iraqi source added.

According to the report, the operation ended with the transport of Jassim from Turkey to Iraq in a military plane.
