- One thing was important to Peter Oster from the Office for Rural Development right at the beginning of the meeting of local councils and members of the community of participants in village renewal: All the plans shown are "preliminary drafts" and a "first planning approach". Therefore, not all of the landowners concerned have been spoken to so far. "We are in a pretty good planning flow and are still at the beginning," said Oster. In the further proceedings, “intensive public participation is desired”.

Bertram Mooser and Friedrich Levin from the “Mooser Engineers” office in Kaufbeuren initially presented two variants for the design of the village square, which, as Levin emphasized, should become the center of the village again in the course of the village renewal - despite the traffic here. "We're not going to get him out," says Levin. One can only try to "push back the traffic as far as possible". Among other things, by reducing the lane widths and relocating parking spaces - for example to the other side of St. Mary's Church. Or by means of optical traffic control through paved road areas, which are intended to induce motorists, for example, no longer to drive on the Dorfstrasse on the way to the B 11, but to use Asamstrasse. New one-way regulations or road closures are also being considered,for example in parts of Tölzer Straße or Finkengasse.

Move maypole?

In the latter, the bus stop could be closed and moved directly to the B 11 near the petrol station.

A stop in this area would "slow down" private transport and strengthen local public transport - a tactic that was definitely wanted, as Mooser emphasized.

"That has been agreed in advance," said the managing director of the engineering office in relation to preliminary discussions with those responsible for local public transport.

In the first variant of the plan for the village square, the maypole would have to be moved a little up the village street from its current location at the main intersection.

Then, explained Levin, there would be enough space to plant additional chestnuts in the village street in front of the Gasthaus zur Post and to create a two-tier terrace and a beer garden.

This would also be possible because the parking spaces there are to be relocated to the B 11.

In this plan, additional trees would be planted in front of the rectory and the village stream would also be made visible again as a basin.

According to Levin, the construction of a “multi-purpose pavilion” on the village square would also be conceivable

Idea: Small park in front of the rectory

Mesner Christian Höck brought a second variant into play.

Höck's idea deviates from the relocation of the maypole, which had already caused skepticism among maypole boys, as the engineers admitted.

The variant would see a small park-like green area with an arcade and fountain in front of the rectory.

As with the first variant, additional trees are to be planted and the parking spaces in front of the "Post" are to be removed.

From the Dorfstrasse up to the Häuserstrasse, the design of the engineering office envisages, among other things, the narrowing of the road as well as the replanting of trees and the rearrangement of parking spaces.

The sidewalks should be paved and benches placed in front of the houses "wherever it fits".

The area of ​​Häuserstrasse, Alexander-Thalhuber-Strasse and Mariabrunn is to be given a "more space-like character", according to Levin, as the current parking spaces are no longer available.

Here, too, the village stream could be brought back to the daylight with a water basin.

The plan is to make the confluence of Häuserstrasse and Sommerkellerweg traffic-calmed by paving and narrowing the street, making it safer for school children.

Paving stones are always a bit louder than an asphalt surface, admitted Levin.

As a means of calming traffic, “it always has an effect”.

Now the citizens should have a say

These first mind games were well received by local councils and the community of participants. Next, Peter Oster from the Office for Rural Development wants to "introduce the whole thing to the citizens". However, he does not yet know whether a residents' meeting is possible due to Corona. Should the pandemic require it, the drafts could also be displayed publicly and citizens could comment on them by email. First of all, however, the landowners should be spoken to, for whom the redesign would lead to massive encroachments on their private areas.

Oster described the village renewal in Benediktbeuern as a “monumental work” that could only be realized “over several years”, but could be completed in five years.

But that also depends on the budget of the municipality.

According to Oster, the measure could begin "in 2023 at the earliest" with the redesign of the village square and the village street to the north.

Here the old pavement would come out first in order to achieve a noise reduction for the residents.
