The trilateral agreement for the conservation of seals in the Wadden Sea, which came into force 30 years ago, started a success story in the opinion of the Environment Ministry in Kiel. State Secretary Dorit Kuhnt said on Tuesday that Schleswig-Holstein has contributed to a significant recovery in stocks with comprehensive protective measures. Germany, Denmark and the Netherlands concluded the protection agreement under the impression that a seal died in 1988.
Kiel - In the course of time, the population recovered: while in 1999 only around 15,200 seals lived in the Wadden Sea, in 2020 around 28,400 animals were recorded, a high since monitoring began.
Intensive hunting up into the 1970s and harmful environmental influences had previously caused a significant decline in populations.
The hunt for seals has been banned since 1974.
Special protection zones for the important littering and resting places for harbor seals and gray seals have been designated, and speed rules for watercraft have been introduced.

"Here in the national park, people can experience seals and gray seals in their natural surroundings in many places," stated Kuhnt.
