The publication about the appointment of Nir Cohen as head of the United News Department of Yedioth Ahronoth and the Ynet website managed to surprise many, but he is more than anything else, it symbolizes the group's path and the balance of power within it.

In 2013 she was published in Walla! Brenze A short and short article under the heading "Yedioth Ahronoth Ihud". The article reported on two reporters' standards in the two new editions of the newspaper and the group's website Ynet will be merged - the correspondent for Palestinian affairs and the correspondent for health. The news item was then framed as a second swallow (after the sport) for the unification of standards, as part of an extensive process of unifying systems within the Yedioth Ahronoth group. The deadline also included a target date: "The move is expected to be complete in 2015 with the transfer of all the group's systems to one building in Rishon Lezion."

Following the unification process, personnel changes were also made, which included senior transfers between the systems, such as the deputy editor of Yedioth Ahronoth and the then head of the news department, Hadas Lahav, was appointed deputy editor of Ynet then (and Walla! Editor) Eran Tiefenbron.

Since quite a few vehicles have flown in Ayalon, the Yedioth Ahronoth group has passed on to a generation under a common roof in Rishon LeZion, but the same union has been sluggish. Until this week.

The publication in The Marker about the appointment of Nir Cohen as head of the united news department of Yedioth Ahronoth and the Ynet website managed to surprise many, but it is more than anything else it symbolizes the group's path and the balance of power within it, especially that of print versus digital.

21 years after its establishment, and almost a decade late, the Internet arm of the Yedioth Ahronoth Group has become central and leading, not only in budgets but also in positions, and especially in the most important place - in the internal consciousness of the company.

Cohen's identification as a distinct Ynet man is evidenced first of all by his resume.

Cohen has been working for the Ynet system for 15 years.

He began his career as a photographer and editor in the sports section and later also served as a presenter of current affairs programs on the site.

Three years ago, Cohen was appointed deputy editor of the site's editor, Dror Amir.

The journalistic front

Against the background of the decline in print, Yedioth also encountered the journalistic front: in fact, with the exception of a few islands such as Nahum Barnea's scoop about a year ago on the agreement to sell the F16 to the Emirates as part of the Avraham deal, the newspaper almost stopped setting an agenda

The move to unify the systems at Yedioth Ahronoth began more than eight years ago, when year after year the target repeatedly moved away for obscene reasons. First, the steady decline in the reading of the daily printed press - followed by the sharp decline in advertising prices. The entry of social networks accelerated the process with the transition to passive content consumption and the establishment of competing entities and deepened the crisis in which the group finds itself. And if that was not enough, Yedioth had to deal with the entry of a new free newspaper, with particularly deep pockets and particularly great motivation. Israel today is his name.

As an intermediate act, it was decided to concentrate most of the efforts in the weekend sector, where advertising prices remained (relatively) high, and the newspaper's content was uploaded in a limited format to the site. Succeeded, and the newspaper halted the decline in the number of readers and even maintained a lead against Israel today.

Against the background of the decline in print, Yedioth also encountered the journalistic front: in fact, with the exception of a few islands such as Nahum Barnea's scoop about a year ago on the agreement to sell the F16 to the Emirates as part of the Avraham deal, the newspaper almost stopped setting an agenda. In addition, he has repeatedly been criticized for being biased in favor of capitalists and powerful politicians (Olmert, then Sharon). The most severe image blow to the newspaper was, of course, the 2,000 case that put publisher Noni Mozes under indictment, reflecting the way he himself allegedly tried to trade the newspaper's employees. Several years since Amit Segal was recruited as chief writer this weekend, at the expense of pushing the feet of Barnea and Sima Kadmon.

And finally - the group went through two waves of significant cuts, with the third and largest one encountered among the repulsion of the journalists 'organization and the workers' unions in the newspaper.

At the same time, the group's management also changed its face within a few years: the paper's editor-in-chief, Ron Yaron, managed to avoid maintaining the required wave of cuts and left in favor of an editor from the young boulevard - Neta Livna.

Ynet editor Ion Feder also left and was replaced by Dror Amir.

On the commercial front, Mozes was forced to say goodbye to Avi Ben Tal, who left in favor of network management.

Decided.

The group's main asset

On the other hand, Ynet has over the years demonstrated growth, and strict maintenance of the lead in the Internet arena, in the face of shocks that befell competitors such as Walla and in the face of Mako's initial failure to produce news, following which the N12 News 12 alternative venture was established.

Israel's failed attempts today to produce a worthy competitor in digital have also left Ynet enough leeway.

The establishment of Ynet + in 2020 symbolized the following goal: inflating an experimental balloon for a payment wall, before the construction of a wall similar to the newspaper's contents.

At the end of the process, most of the newspaper's content, as well as that of Calcalist, are expected to stand behind it.

Ynet's content will not be paid for, and the site will remain open to the public.

The main task of the united body will be to create the same synergy that it will be able to maintain - despite giving up quite a few reporters and editors - on a journalistic fighting spirit, but also on a profit line.
