North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has promised to build an "invincible" army in the face of "hostile" US policies and South Korean military force building, while standing alongside the biggest missiles in his regime's arsenal. North Korea's official news agency reported last night (Tuesday) that Kim said the things during a visit he made yesterday to a security exhibit. According to the North Korean dictator, Pyongyang developed its army for self-defense and not to start a war.

Among the weapons Kim surveyed were intercontinental ballistic missiles, including the Wassong-16. It is North Korea's largest intercontinental missile and was unveiled at a military parade last October, but no trial has yet been conducted. "We are not talking about war with anyone, but on the contrary, preventing the war itself and increasing deterrence in order to protect national sovereignty," Kim said. He noted that that the main enemy of North Korea is "the war itself".

A spokesman for the South Korean Ministry of Defense said at a press briefing that South Korean and American intelligence services are already examining the weapons on display at the show and they will continue to monitor the situation closely.

The United States says it is ready to negotiate at any time, but Pyongyang has gifted it by lifting sanctions and ending joint exercises with the South. Kim said it was hard to believe the United States' claims that it was not behaving hostilely toward North Korea in the face of continuing "its wrong decisions and actions." He did not specify what he meant.

At the same time, South Korea's National Security Adviser, Sue Hoon, will meet today in Washington with his American counterpart Jake Sullivan to discuss North Korea. He told reporters yesterday that he planned to raise President Moon Jae-in's proposal for an official declaration of an end to the Korean War - which ended in 1953 with a ceasefire rather than an official peace agreement - and possible easing of sanctions.

Last week, the North renewed its hotline with the South, which it severed two months ago, when Pyongyang urged Seoul to step up its efforts to improve relations after criticizing "double standards" over its weapons.

In his speech yesterday, Kim attacked Seoul's "unlimited and dangerous" efforts to strengthen its army.

He claimed that they were "destroying the military balance in the Korean Peninsula and increasing the instability and military danger."

He said, "On the absurd excuse of suppressing our threats, South Korea has openly stated on various occasions its desire to gain a military advantage over us."
