It's finally back, the supermarket for the Dachau residents who live in the old town.

And the first few weeks are promising.

Dachau

- For three months there has been a supermarket and bakery in the old town again.

The people of Dachau are grateful for the offer, especially at lunchtime the shop is buzzing.

The operators now want to expand their business to include a delivery service.

Quickly get a few ingredients for dinner or go shopping for the whole week: residents of the old town have been able to do that on foot again since this summer.

After there was no local supplier for years, the bonus supermarket opened in the basement of Pfarrstrasse 1 in June.

An offer that customers have been discovering for themselves since it opened.

"The development is positive, things are steadily improving," says Karsten Fischer, Head of Sales at Bonus gGmbH.

However, Fischer makes no secret of this, the start could have been a little more lively: “We are not yet completely satisfied with the development.” But the Bonus Sales Manager is optimistic: it is getting better every day.

And the customers who were already in the market expressed their satisfaction across the board. Positive feedback has come from personal conversations and reviews on the Internet. It is emphasized that "everyone is happy that there is again a shop in the old town". This has achieved what the builders Franz and Andreas Scherm, who had rebuilt and developed the striking Birgmann property, set out to do: "Our central goal of gaining a local supplier for the old town again has been achieved!"

If the bonus supermarket started a little hesitantly, there are specific reasons, as Karsten Fischer explains. "Normally we have a small party when we open a new store, and that is also announced in a big way." The market in Dachau, on the other hand, was "simply opened" because of the pandemic. And that just before the holidays, because the construction work had been delayed. “That was not the ideal time.” The stairs that lead down to the market were also not yet finished. “Because of the construction site, passers-by couldn't see that we were open.” Now the steps and a barrier-free path are ready, there are nice seats above and an inviting atmosphere.

Nevertheless, it could be a while before everyone has discovered the bonus market, says Fischer. Because the last supermarket in the old town, the shop operated by the Franziskuswerk Schönbrunn on Resistance Square, was closed in 2017. Since then there has been no more shopping opportunities in the old town. “As a result, people have come to terms with shopping elsewhere. We need a little perseverance now, ”emphasizes the sales manager.

The market distributes flyers every week so that the new shopping facility is known.

And the company has a lot of staying power anyway.

Because Bonus is a non-profit company that does not have to generate a profit, but for which a "black zero" is sufficient.

The social goals include, on the one hand, the professional integration of those disadvantaged in the labor market, but also securing local supplies within walking distance in the town centers.

And there are quite a lot of people from Dachau who can walk to the new supermarket.

A study has shown that there are 6,600 residents within an eight-minute walk, says Andreas Scherm.

Because the paths in the old town can also be steep and older people in particular may not want to carry their shopping home, the bonus market now also offers a delivery service.

Customers order by phone or shop in the normal way, and the goods are then delivered to their home.

The idea behind it is not just the service concept, but also a social aspect, explains Sales Manager Fischer.

"In this way, the older population can maintain their social contacts while shopping."
