Health Minister: "By the end of the year the entire population from the age of 3 will be protected" • Although the vaccine was approved for emergency use, many in the country refused to receive it

The South American country began yesterday (Tuesday) another vaccination campaign for minors using the "Synopharm" vaccine developed and owned by the Chinese government.

Although the vaccine was approved for emergency use by the World Health Organization last May, much concern has accompanied its use and it has indeed been found to be less effective than its Western counterparts.

A large part of the public in Argentina refused to accept the shot.

The country has gone through some significant shocks in the last two years, with a policy of tightest closures lasting more than 12 months, and the dismissal of the Minister of Health for keeping vaccines for his associates and members of the government.

In addition, the vaccination campaign took many months to take off, and is characterized by extreme deficiencies in the purchase and distribution stages.

A small number of Argentines did receive both injections by the time required between the first and second dose, but most vaccinators had to wait many months.

One of the signs of public distrust in state institutions and especially in the government of President Alberto Fernandez occurred last September, when in the internal elections the Peronist party and its partners suffered a huge discrimination.

The blow was so severe that Fernandez had to change his cabinet in the hope of improving his condition before the November 14 midterm elections.

Despite this, the country approved the use of the Chinese vaccine a few days ago.

"Before the end of the year the entire population over the age of 3 will be protected," tweeted Health Minister Carla Visotti.

"We want to vaccinate the children for their safety, so that we can reach herd immunity and so that they can go to schools," said Omar Tubaku, chairman of the country's Pediatric Association.

While most countries are struggling with the more violent delta strain of the corona, the South American country has survived the current wave with relatively low numbers compared to its neighbors.

To date, some 115,000 Argentines have died from corona.
