Exactly 50 years ago, the first comprehensive schools opened in Lower Saxony.
The anniversary will be celebrated on Tuesday (12 noon) in the Integrated Comprehensive School (IGS) in Langenhagen near Hanover.
Prime Minister Stephan Weil (SPD) is expected to attend the ceremony.
Langenhagen - The first seven comprehensive schools in Lower Saxony accepted pupils after the 1971 summer vacation - in Langenhagen, Braunschweig, Fürstenau, Garbsen, Hanover, Hildesheim and Wolfsburg.
Children with different learning requirements are taught together here and supported individually.
The GEW education union demanded and promoted the establishment of comprehensive schools, said the GEW state chairwoman Laura Pooth.
Today, however, schools urgently need more financial resources.
